A Secret Hope

A wave, crashing upon my head
Perhaps, wishing I was dead
The monster rising in the sky
Biting down, with a frothy smile
Beating down, and there I go
Drowning within, down below
Water crushing into my lungs
Tried to breathe, but it really stung
Pulling me in, into deeper sea
Where no rope, no help could reach
The ocean kept a secret cold
Which way was up, it never told
And so I sank, and sank like a stone
But I too had a story, a secret my own
The sea could swallow, and so it did
But my heart preserved, a pearl I hid
A hand reached into the inky depths
Desperately groping for the pearl I kept
Darkness with my last remaining sigh
I pulled myself out into the open sky
As many before her, the ocean tried
I know the seas would long go dry
Before I ever give up what is mine
They cannot steal, they cannot find
My secret strength, the 'hope' inside
